An Observation…

6 10 2010

Kimberly observed today the peculiar difference in responses people give when you tell them that you are adopting rather than having a baby.  Typically, when you tell someone you are having a baby, the response is:

“Congratulations!”  ”Children are such a blessing.”  ”You guys are so lucky.”  ”There is no greater joy.”  ”You never know how much you can love someone until you have your own child.”

In these statements the focus of the blessing is that of the child to the parents.  When you tell someone your adopting, the response is typically:

“That’s so awesome.”  ”Those children will be blessed to have you as parents.”  ”You guys are doing a great thing.”  ”At least those children will have good parents.”

In these statements the focus of the blessing is that of the parent to the children.  Interesting.  Why is that?

Coupon Craze

12 12 2009

As of late, my wife has taken to shopping with coupons.  Before this, she would do most her shopping at Wal-Mart because, coupon or no coupon, they have the cheaper prices.  Which means you don’t have to fool with going through all the papers and looking for coupons.  The downside to Wal-Mart is that their meat is generally not as fresh as say, Kroger.  So, she would go to Wal-Mart for most things and stop back by Kroger when their meat was on sale.  Well, then Kroger came to our neighborhood, which means a shorter drive and we save on gas.  But, that also means we now subscribe to the Sunday paper and Kimberly hunts coupons.  The key at shopping Kroger, as I’ve observed, is watching for sales and watching for coupons both in paper form and online.  Yes, you can load coupons onto your Kroger card.  What that means is if you have a coupon for a certain item and it’s loaded onto your card, you get double savings for that item.  In the end and after the hard work of looking and watching, Kroger ends up being cheaper than Wal-Mart.  As a bonus, once you’ve purchased $100 in groceries on your card you save 10 cents per gallon in gas.

I’m sure there are more bonuses and disadvantages that I’ve not mentioned and Kimberly could fill you in on.  But, I’ve really enjoyed watching the price of our groceries drop as the cashier scans coupon after coupon.  So, thank you to my wife for her diligence in saving money and in some cases spending none.

On a side note, a friend of ours blogs over at Frugal Menu Mamas. She’s got daily tips on creative ways to save money on groceries and good recipes as well. So check her out!
